How to Treat Sunspots on Skin
Some conjecture exists about different spots and marks that appear on the skin as we age. We often hear the terms “sun spots”, “liver spots”, and “age spots” used synonymously. Whilst each of these conditions does affect skin pigmentation, they are not the same and should also not be confused with the raised, warty-looking lesions known as seborrheic keratoses.
Let’s look at the condition of sunspots and, more importantly, how to treat sunspots on skin.
What are Sunspots?
Doctors refer to sunspots as “solar lentigines”. They are flat, concentrated spots of darkened and brown pigmentation formed by exposure to UV rays. Similar in appearance to a freckle, sunspots generally begin to appear in people over age 45 as an effect of aging. Sunspots often start to appear in conjunction with other symptoms of sun-damaged skin.
Sunspots are noncancerous skin blemishes. However, they should be closely monitored with regular skin examinations as they often develop alongside melanoma and other skin cancers.
Not all brown spots or freckles lead to skin cancer, and most can be safely removed. However, before removing them, it is essential to check that they are nothing more than pigmentation.
Actinic Keratoses (Solar Keratoses)
Confusingly, another type of skin lesion is sometimes referred to as “sunspots” but is entirely different. This condition presents as red, scaly lesions across the skin that people often mistake for patches of dry skin or dermatitis. These lesions are actinic or solar keratoses.
Actinic keratoses also develop due to prolonged sun exposure and indicate that the skin has been severely damaged. This condition is not always benign and can be pre-cancer or early-stage skin cancer.
If you notice the appearance of rough, scaly patches of skin on your hands, face or lips that never seem to heal, you should seek professional advice without delay.
Sunspot Treatment
The good news is that the hyperpigmentation of sunspots (solar lentigines) can be treated. Although harmless, their appearance may be a cause of concern and affect self-esteem and self-confidence. In this instance, removal may be the best course of action.
At Define Laser, we treat sunspots with our Gentle Max Pro Laser. This particular laser targets only the pigmented lesion in the skin. It absorbs the light without damaging the surrounding skin.
The laser heats up and shatters the pigment. Depending on the type of pigment and laser settings, the treated areas will be red and could look flaky and have some mild scabbing afterwards. This will only last a few days at the most. Downtime is minimal, and the results will be immediately visible, progressing to maximum effect after 7-10 days. How to Prevent Sunspots on Skin
It may seem obvious, but the best way to prevent the development of sunspots is to limit the skin’s exposure to the sun. Slip, slop, slap, as they say!
Living in Australia, UV exposure is always high regardless of the season. It is best to avoid being in the sun during the hottest parts of the day when UV rating is highest – usually between 10 am and 3 pm.
If you cannot avoid going out in the sun, cover your skin with sunsafe clothing and wide-brimmed hats. Always apply a high-quality sunscreen and get into the habit of choosing cosmetics that contain sunscreen.
Prevention is always the best “cure”, and the best part about having your sunspots treated at Define Laser is that Dr Watson will also do a skin check at the same time.
