Our bodies change as we get older and exposure to different elements, particularly the sun is going to have an effect.
Our skin takes the biggest impact which is why you may notice many changes with freckles, spots and discolouration.
In this blog, we’re going to talk about how to treat age spots and what’s involved in the procedure that is used at Define Laser & Cosmetic Clinic.
What are age spots?
Age spots is the most common term used but they can also be called solar lentigines, liver spots (although there is no connection to the liver), sun spots or seborrhoeic keratoses.
Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its colour. When the body is exposed to sunlight, extra melanin is produced to protect the skin from the UV rays and when the melanin clumps, it produces age spots. The more melanin that is produced, the darker the skin becomes.
Treatment options
- Laser is the most effective treatment option with minimal downtime and disruption to the surrounding skin. Some of the benefits of laser treatment include:Minimal downtime and pain.
- You will usually only need 2-3 treatments.
- After the treatment ensure you use a good moisturizer and sunscreen in your daily routine if you don’t already, as this will assist in preventing the age spots from returning or any new ones popping up.
- Sun avoidance is the key to prevention of recurrence.
How we treat age spots
At Define Laser, we use a state-of-the-art laser machine that assures the procedure is safe and effective.
- Freckles, age spots and pigmentation are targeted with minimal damage to the surrounding skin with fantastic results.
- Our treatment is quick and your eyes are protected with goggles during the procedure.
- Usually 2 – 3 visits are required depending on the extent of solar damage and the age of the skin.
How to prevent age spots returning
If you have had your age spots treated with laser, the spots will gradually fade over several weeks. Initially there may be a slight discoloration of the skin and darkening of the pigment, but that will fade. To prevent the age spots from returning, sun protection when outdoors is mandatory – sunscreen, hats and clothing to cover where possible.
