Best Skin Pigmentation Treatment
Skin pigmentation treatment – our skin is a big part of our identity and also our self-confidence. It can be a representation of our ancestry, our culture, and our lifestyle.
As we age, our skin changes in multiple ways, including its elasticity, firmness, plumpness, tone and pigmentation. Not only does the skin appearance change, but unwanted freckles, moles, spots, and other pigmented blemishes can start to appear.
How to Get Rid of Skin Pigmentation
Melanin is a substance in our skin that creates colour. In certain places, melanin can collect, making areas darker or discoloured from the rest of our skin.
Over time, sun exposure can cause extra melanin to be produced as a protective measure from UV rays. “Age spots”, “sun spots”, and “liver spots” are formed this way. Interesting fact: “liver spots” have nothing to do with our liver!
One of the best skin pigmentation treatments is laser. Not only is it effective, but it is a convenient treatment with very little discomfort or downtime too.
How Does Laser Skin Pigmentation Treatment Work?
A laser produces wavelengths of light which are applied to the areas to be treated. The pigmented areas absorb this light which then “shatters” the pigment and draws it to the skin’s surface.
As the skin heals, the pigmentation will dry and fall away, revealing fresh new skin underneath.
Patients will see great results after 7-10 days, and after a course of 2-3 treatments, a considerable difference will be noticeable.
What To Expect At Your Laser Skin Pigmentation Treatment Session
The procedure itself is quite simple but due to the specialised equipment and training required, it will always be performed in our clinic by Dr Lindsay Watson.
Your session will begin with a full skin check of the region prior to your treatment to ensure that the procedure is safe and will be effective.
Dr Watson uses the Candela 755nm Machine to perform a laser treatment across the area where you hope to reduce the skin pigmentation.
Although the most common treatment areas are face, neck and the back of the hands, patients can also choose to treat the following areas:
- Decolletage
- Forearms
- Legs
- Shoulder
To provide a holistic approach, some patients will often opt to treat incidental nasal spider veins and nasal skin pores at the same time. This treatment uses the Candela 1064nm wavelength an aims to smooth the skin so that blemishes and bumps are removed. If requested, skin “bumps”, small moles and growths are evaporated during the treatment whilst also treating the skin pigmentation at the same time.
Your treatment will conclude with a series of laser balm, face masks and cooling treatments being applied to the treated area.
What are the Benefits of Skin Pigmentation Treatment with Laser?
Your laser skin pigmentation treatment session is quick, effective and pain-free. You may experience a slight sensation similar to a rubber band snapping the skin, but it is over in a couple of minutes and totally bearable.
There are other great benefits to choosing laser pigmentation removal:
- Reverse the signs of sun damage
- Skin will look younger and fresher
- Your confidence will be restored with blemishes gone
- A full course of treatment will clear approximately 80% of skin blemishes
- Almost no side effects (some minimal swelling and redness to the sight)
- Treatment is targeted so there is no damage to surrounding skin areas
- Minimal recovery time (2-3 days)
How Do I Prevent Skin Pigmentation From Returning?
Laser skin pigmentation is a very effective treatment. Because it targets areas that have been damaged by sun exposure and age, it is essential to keep areas protected after your treatment.
For best results, always use a good sunscreen and avoid exposing the treated areas to the sun for one week after treatment. The old Aussie saying of “Slip, Slop, Slap!” is your mantra here! Avoid the sun, and always wear a hat and protective clothing when the sun is unavoidable.
Patients should also avoid exfoliating products and serums for 7 days following treatment to allow full healing and recovery.
As the largest organ in our body, our skin always reflects our health, both good and bad. Another level of protection comes from the INSIDE. Following a healthy diet and lifestyle will also help your skin glow and reduce any recurrence of pigmentation blemishes once they have been treated.
