Seborrheic keratoses are raised, warty looking spots that come in various colours and appear pasted onto the skin. A single lesion is referred to as a seborrheic keratosis.
Seborrheic keratoses can appear anywhere on the body but generally on the face, neck, chest and back. They are noncancerous (benign) and can appear as single lesions or groupings.
They seldom go away on their own, and besides looking unsightly, they can become irritable and uncomfortable. Depending on their location, seborrheic keratoses can be prone to trauma and injury due to clothing friction and everyday activities. This can cause them to become itchy, irritated, red and inflamed.
If you find that you are self-conscious or not loving your skin because of these growths, read on! Define Laser has a very safe, easy, and effective way to remove seborrheic keratoses.
What Causes Seborrheic Keratoses?
There is no clear explanation as to what causes seborrheic keratoses. Despite their appearance, they are not a wart and therefore not caused by a virus.
It is thought they are genetic, and the aging process plays a part. The growths are much more prevalent in older people. It has been estimated that over 90% of adults over the age of 60 years have one or more seborrheic keratoses.
There are several other commonly accepted causes of the condition. These include a history of sunburn, dermatitis, and skin friction.
Seborrheic keratoses are not contagious, so you cannot contract them from anyone else or spread them to others.
What is the Best Form of Treatment for Seborrheic Keratoses?
Although this condition can sometimes be embarrassing and uncomfortable, treatment is just a phone call away!
If you have a seborrheic keratosis that is unsightly, itchy, or plain annoying, it can be removed. In our clinic here at Define Laser, Dr Watson uses a unique radio-wave surgery device to easily remove the offending lesion. Best of all, it is a quick and easy procedure!
The treatment requires minimal anaesthetic, zero downtime and best of all – no sutures!
The procedure time is usually around 15 – 30 mins from beginning to end. The timing is determined by the number of lesions being removed and the areas being treated.
We recently shared a video showing the effectiveness of the seborrheic keratoses removal procedure. You can view it HERE.
Post Treatment Care
Dr Watson will apply a dressing to the treatment area following your procedure. You should leave the dressing on for around 48hrs. After removing the initial dressing, you may need to apply healing gel for a few days.
The wound will heal just like a small superficial graze, and after time, you may notice the skin a little lighter in that spot.
You attend the clinic for a follow-up appointment a few weeks after the procedure. Dr Watson will check your progress and ensure the lesions have healed correctly. Dr Watson will also determine and discuss any further treatment needed at this appointment.
Permanent Lesion Removal
In most cases, seborrheic keratoses don’t regrow after being removed, and the treatment is considered permanent. However, they can appear elsewhere on your body. As discussed above, the aging process tends to increase the likelihood of the lesions developing. The frequency of new lesions will vary from person to person.
