These days, there is a lot of discussion in the cosmetic industry about “injectables”. The truth is that are two types of cosmetic injectable:
- Treatments for wrinkles and fine lines
- Facial volumising
Although they are two different treatments, as mentioned above, they are often referred to interchangeably. Also, they can be used in combination with each other for a more holistic treatment.
So just what differentiates the two? In this blog, we discuss the differences so you can decide which may be right for you.
Treatments for wrinkles and fine lines
Treatments for wrinkles work by relaxing and freezing the muscles in the injected areas. This stops the face from moving in such a way that creates and emphasises fine lines and wrinkles.
The full effect of this type of cosmetic injection is not immediate. The results will increase gradually, with maximum benefit achieved around 2-3 weeks after treatment.
The product used is temporary, and these types of injections can also be combined with other treatments, such as facial volumising and laser, to be even more effective.
Treatments for wrinkles are commonly used to address areas on the face such as:
- crows feet
- forehead
- frown lines
- lips (smokers lines)
They can also be used to treat medical conditions such as migraines, excessive sweating, and jaw clenching.
What are the side effects of treatments for wrinkles?
There can be a little discomfort at the time of the treatment, as one would expect with any injection. This is minimised with the use of numbing treatments, though. Define Laser has a special blend of numbing cream formulated just for us, and we recommend this to our clients who are a little more sensitive than others.
Downtime and side effects are minimal. Some redness and bruising can occur, although this is rare.
Most clients complete their treatment and go about their day without any need for downtime.
Facial volumising
Facial volumising involves a substance that is injected under the skin and remains in place to fill and plump wrinkles, lines and areas that have begun to sag. The result is an increased volume in the skin and a softer, more youthful appearance.
The product used for facial volumising remains under the skin, and the results can last for up to 18 months, depending on which product was used.
Because facial volumising treatments contain hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, they can also have other benefits. Hyaluronic acid aids in the production of collagen, elastin and natural hydration in the body. Therefore, the use of dermal fillers can also encourage these in aging skin.
Areas that are commonly treated are:
- Cheeks
- Tear troughs
- Chin
- Lips
Facial volumising can also correct asymmetry and reshape some facial structures such as jawlines.
What are the side effects of facial volumising?
If a highly trained and skilled technician has completed your treatment, you should experience very few side effects of issues.
As with treatments for wrinkles, you can expect some discomfort at the time of treatment, but our prescription-only topical numbing cream will take care of that for you.
Best of all, the results are instant! Although there may be a little swelling and redness in the area, you will see an instant improvement with a dermal filler treatment.
You can expect some tenderness, swelling and possible bruising to the area, but this will only be temporary (and further minimised by the correct aftercare). Most patients do not experience any downtime, and some even schedule their appointments to be on their lunch break!
