What is the basis of skin pigmentation? Melanin is the basis of our skin colour. Those with darker skin have more melanin in their skin than those with lighter skin.
Excessive skin pigmentation may be as a result of sun exposure, hormonal changes ( eg. Melasma ) post pregnancy or the oral contraceptive pill. Or it may be congenital, ( eg. Birthmarks).
Pigmented regions have an excessive concentration of melanin; which may result in freckles, sun spots or sun damaged skin.
Exposure to high levels of UV radiation, such as we experience in Australia, can accelerate skin pigmentation.
In some cases skin trauma may result in pigmentation; whilst acne and chemical peels may also contribute at times.
