The Best Treatment for Under Eye Dark Circles

Dark circles under the eyes can become more obvious with age. This is due to gravity, loss of collagen and thinning of the bony structure, which is called bone resorption. These effects result in the bulging of the fat pad under the eye, and can give a shadowy look causing you to appear tired and worn out.

We have found that one of the best treatments for under eye dark circles is to inject the tear trough area with cosmetic filler. The procedure can slow the aging process and give an almost instant “refresh”!

How does Tear Trough Filler Work?

The tear troughs are treated with a fine filler (with local anaesthetic) to lift this delicate region under the eyes. Injection sites are selected over the bony part of the orbit – around the eye and beneath the tear trough region, depending on where the dark circles extend.

This procedure is completed in two stages, 2-4 weeks apart to avoid too much swelling. This can occur as the filler will attract water resulting in a small degree of swelling. We aim for an 80% correction in the first visit. It is further refined in the subsequent visit, allowing for sufficient improvement without causing any puffiness under the eyes.

This treatment freshens and gives a more youthful appearance around the eye and midface region. Its effects last for about 6-8 months.

The treatment is completed using a particularly fine needle, and using slower injection techniques than other injectable treatments. These steps will assist in reducing post treatment swelling and bruising.

Additionally, you may notice Dr Watson apply gentle pressure to the area after the treatment. The aim of this is to reduce the likelihood of bruising.

Post Treatment Care

The tear trough area has very thin and delicate skin and should be cared for in an appropriate manner following treatment.

Because there are many fine blood vessels in the area, combined with the thinner skin, the area can be prone to some swelling, redness and/or bruising. This can present for 3 – 7 days following each treatment.

We recommend that you consider this so that you may adjust your schedule accordingly when booking your treatment. Be mindful to avoid any special events planned within 7 days just in case there is some bruising.

Following your tear trough filler, we advise waiting for 24 hours before applying any makeup to the area.

Frequent application of ice to the area following treatment can also assist in reducing swelling and bruising.
