Droopy Eyelid after Anti-Wrinkle Treatment
Let’s talk about the phenomena known as “droopy eyelid” that sometimes occurs after anti-wrinkle cosmetic injectable treatments.
Can you get droopy eyelid after anti-wrinkle treatment? Yes, you can. It is uncommon, but it does happen. As with any medical procedure, there is always a risk of side effects and complications from frown anti-wrinkle injections, but fortunately, they occur rarely.
What is Droopy Eyelid?
Droopy eyelid can be a side effect of injecting two areas – the forehead and between the eyes. It looks as though one eyelid “droops” below where it would normally sit, giving a sagging appearance. The condition is also called ptosis or blepharoptosis.
Droopy eye occurs in around 5% of patients, but the risk is reduced to 1% if an experienced doctor performs the procedure.
Droopy eye can occur when the anti-wrinkle injection has leaked from the treatment area out to a muscle that raises and lowers the upper eyelid. This muscle is called the levator.
When this happens, your eye won’t be able to close properly because the muscle isn’t able to elevate fully, creating a droopy eyelid.
Symptoms of Droopy Eyelid
The condition may range from very subtle to more severe. In addition to being unable to close your eye properly, you could also experience the following symptoms:
- Eye heaviness. Your eyelid feels “heavy” and the feeling increases as the day wears on.
- Inability to open (and close) your eye or “Lazy eye.” You cannot control the movement/muscles of your eye, and if severe, it can even impede your vision.
- Difficulty applying makeup. You may first notice the condition when you struggle to apply mascara or eye makeup due to the change in position of your eyelid.
Should this rare condition develop, the side effects will start to show 2-4 days after the injection. Symptoms will increase, progressing to maximum symptoms after 2 weeks when the anti-wrinkle compound takes full effect.
All Medical Procedures Carry an Element of Risk
At the end of the day, cosmetic injectables are a medical procedure involving the use of anti-wrinkle injections, and all medical procedures carry an element of risk.
Anti-wrinkle injections are the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world. The treatment is an effective, efficient, and affordable solution for many types of facial cosmetic issues. Although there are risks, they are minimal, and fortunately, the results are not permanent.
Prevention of Droopy Eyelid
The eyebrows and eyelids are such prominent facial features. Your eyes are one of the first things people notice about you. The eyebrows are commonly referred to as taking on the role of “framing the face”.
Therefore, it is paramount that you seek treatment from a reputable Doctor who is an experienced aesthetic injector.
There is no amount of money saved that can compensate for a bad experience. Consider this treatment as an investment in yourself!
By engaging an experienced injector like Dr Lindsay Watson, you can be assured that the correct injection techniques are used and reduce the risk of conditions like droopy eyelid occurring.
How to Treat Eyelid Droop
Should you be one of the rare few to experience droopy eyelid, there is the option to return to the clinic to have more antiwrinkle by injecting a little more into the side that is lower. This will eventually correct the asymmetry, and generally, it will realign within 7 – 14 days.
Some natural remedies that contain anti-inflammatory agents can also ease the symptoms. These include:
- Chamomile tea bags. Bags must be cold, so store them in the fridge before use. Place over eyes for 20 minutes and relax.
- Chilled cucumber slices. Place over the eyes for 15-20 minutes.
- Iced water. Wash your face with ice-cold water 3 – 4 times a day.
