What are Crow’s Feet?
“Crow’s feet” are those pesky fine lines, or wrinkles extending from the outer corner of the eye. Extending in the shape of a crow’s foot. They are often referred to as “smile lines”.
Combined with lifestyle and environmental factors, these lines are formed from repeated facial expressions involving the skin around your eyes, especially from laughing, blinking, squinting, and even sleeping. A person blinks 15 to 20 times per minute on average and this constant movement causes facial muscles to crinkle and fold. Whether in happiness, or sadness, all types of facial movements will eventually cause wrinkles as age sets in.
The constant muscle contractions used are what help develop wrinkles around the eye area. There are two types of wrinkles, and we discuss those below.
Type of Wrinkles
While we all have different types of skin, fine lines and wrinkles generally start to appear from around age 25. At this stage, the wrinkles only appear when you smile and disappear when you relax your face. The elastin and collagen in your skin, allow it to return to its smooth state when movement stops. These types of creases are known as dynamic wrinkles.
As you get older your skin loses both elastin and collagen. This reduces the ability for the skin to return to its usual position (lack of elasticity) or to be filled back out (plumpness).
Once this occurs, and the wrinkles remain when the face is relaxed, these are static (permanent) wrinkles. Permanent wrinkles increase in age and this is when crow’s feet truly appear.
Let’s Target Those Crow’s Feet!
When it comes to skin aging, there is very little you can do to stop the process. Wrinkles and spots are the results of the accumulation of defects in cells that develop over time. You can, however, reduce and slow the effects by adopting some simple lifestyle changes.
Hot Tip: If you should begin to experience a decrease in vision, start wearing reading glasses without delay. This will help keep your eyes wide open and reduce crow’s feet inducing squinting!
A significant contributor to increasing the aging process is the sun. This is due to the sun’s UV rays which enhance the progress of free radicals in the skin. In terms of prevention, wearing an SPF daily is essential to protect your skin from UV rays and prevent aging and wrinkles.
There are several other approaches that may help to prevent wrinkles around the eyes. Natural alternatives include:
- Regular application of cucumber eye patches
- Use of egg white face or honey & yoghurt face masks
- Adequate hydration – inside and out
- Healthy diet
- Avoid smoking
Of course, consistently following a good skincare routine is imperative in maintaining youthful skin.
Anti-Wrinkle Injections for the Treatment of Crow’s Feet
The use of anti-wrinkle treatments performed by an experienced aesthetic injector is the most effective way to reduce and prevent crow’s feet. If taking this approach, it is paramount to ensure that you are being treated by a qualified GP who is experienced in aesthetic injecting.
Your GP will know the appropriate amount of anti-wrinkle to inject in the eye area, causing the muscles to relax and prevent them from contracting. The result should be smooth and natural-looking skin surrounding around the eye.
Treating with anti-wrinkle injections for this area, will not stop facial expressions. The injections will only target the muscles around the eye causing the crow’s feet. Your technician should always aim for a natural result that allows your natural personality to shine through, never affecting your natural expressiveness.
Anti-wrinkle injections should never result in a face that looks “frozen”. Character lines – as they are often called – give you the ability to smile, laugh and show your frustration and emotion. The ability to communicate through expression and to demonstrate your personality is an important and attractive quality. It is what makes you unique! But a little freshening up can do wonders for your mood and self-confidence too!
